Lello Bookstore
Portuguese history, culture and tradition.
A Bookstore with History
The current building of Livraria Lello originates from the international bookstore of Ernesto Chardron, the first publisher of part of the works of Camilo Castelo Branco and Eça de Queirós, founded in 1869. In 1894, José Lello and his brother bought the Chardron Bookshop and all its valuables from Mathieux Lugan, the owner at the time.
Designed by the engineer Xavier Esteves and constituting one of the most significant examples of Porto’s neogothic, the new building was inaugurated on January 13 of 1906, in an environment full of important political and artistic figures, prominent bourgeois and merchants of the city.
Among the illustrious figures present at the inauguration, the writer Guerra Junqueiro, the director of O Comércio, Bento Carqueja, the writer Júlio Brandão and Aurélio Paz dos Reis, a precursor of cinema in Portugal, stand out.
High Artistic Value
The famous neo-Gothic facade has panels that symbolize the figures of Art and Science painted by José Bielman, and its top has a lacy plat band. In an Art Nouveau and Eclectic style, there is a set of bas-reliefs where the founders of the bookstore, José Lello and António Lello, are represented.
Throughout the room can also be found the busts of some of the most important Portuguese writers, such as Eça de Queirós, Camilo Castelo Branco, Antero de Quental, Tomás Ribeiro, Guerra Junqueiro or Teófilo Braga signed by Romão Júnior.
The interior of the building has a fascinating artistic value, such as the painted plaster ceiling that looks more like carved wood, the magnificent stained-glass window, or the elegant red staircase that gives access to the upper floor that inspired the author of the “Harry Potter” saga in the illustration of the Hogwarts stairs. However, J. K. Rowling has already gone public to say that she regrets never having visited the Lello bookstore, because she considers it very beautiful, and when she lived in Porto, she was unaware of its existence.
A Space for Cultural Reflection
Livraria Lello now offers its visitors new spaces. Located in the basement of the bookstore there is now a place dedicated to reflection and cultural involvement, where authors, artists and culture lovers can dialogue and produce culture. This space regularly hosts a program called Living Voices, where cultural and artistic events are held in the fields of literature, theatre, cinema and ideological debate.
One of Lello’s concerns is the creation, exhibition and preservation of its collections, and to achieve it, they decided to open the Gemma room dedicated to the cult of books, which represents a significant investment for the bookstore. In this room you can find first editions, editions signed by the authors, rare books and current editions of luxury books.
The growing tourist flow over the last few years in the city and consequently, in Lello’s bookstore, made them change the building access policy, requiring since 2015 an entrance voucher that can be discounted in books.
