Boat Bridge
Portuguese history, culture and tradition.
Bridge Souls is a memorial in honor of the tragedy known as the Boat Bridge disaster through a bronze relief made by sculptor Teixeira Lopes (father) in 1897. Exposed under a wrought iron porch, it consists of a quadrangular panel carved in bronze on a marble structure.
It is an episode of great importance that occurred during the French invasions on March 29, 1809, when a bridge built on twenty barges, connected by steel cables, collapsed under the excess weight of citizens fleeing to the south bank, causing the death of more than four thousand people.
In front, next to the bank of the river where the bridge of barges was located, and to mark the bicentenary of the tragic accident, is an iron piece symbolizing its existence, elaborated by the architect Souto Moura, and which is also present on the other side of the bank.
The original canvas depicting the disaster of the Bridge of The Barges is kept in the church of São José das Taipas, a crossing point included in Tour 3 – Thru Baixa, Clérigos e Virtudes.
